History of the GFAA

Gilbert Fine Arts Association (GFAA) began in 1972 with a professional Art Show for local residents. This was part of Newcomer's Day (sponsored by the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce) and was later expanded to include school district art students. Over the next several years, this artist group grew in size and numbers.

  • In 1977, we added the Performing Arts to our repertoire and became known as the Fine Arts Society. On July 3, 1980, the Gilbert Fine Arts Association became officially incorporated.
  • In 1984, our Annual Youth Scholarship Program was initiated for students in the Gilbert Unified School District. This fine arts scholarship program is implemented annually when funds permit.
  • On July 12, 1988, GFAA members proudly accepted a written resolution from Gilbert's Mayor and Town Council members commending us for our outstanding contributions to Gilbert and designating us as the organization responsible for advocating the arts in Gilbert.
  • In 2001, the Gilbert Youth Theater was started to provide an opportunity for Gilbert's kids and teens to perform for their community.
  • In 1994, our Theatrical Academy for Youth (TAFY) Program was begun. In 1998, this program expanded to nine months of educational classes with various acting Troupes performing during the year.
  • In 1996, Company G! was added for young people to participate in choir classes and numerous vocal performances throughout the area. In 1998, Company G! expanded to eight months of educational classes. Our "feeder" choir program, F Troupe! began in September 1999 and also meets weekly for classes.
  • In 2003, The Gilbert Community Players was formed, to produce smaller theatrical performances with the goal of making donations to support community charitable groups.
  • In 2005, The GFAA was given the use of the "Old Boys and Girls Cub" for a year. During that year, we perfomed a series of shows and workshops called "TheaterFest". The building has since been torn down
  • In 2007, The GFAA continues its search for a permanent home theater.

The young students enrolled in our Youth Programs are proudly serving as ambassadors of Gilbert in the arts arena.
